The water quality of our rivers has been a hot topic in the press over recent months. Citizen awareness and action on the pollution of rivers has also increased. The River Culm experiences a range of sources of pollution and during this event we will explore them, how things have got into the state they are, what the current situation is and how we can work together to improve things. What are the main sources of pollution and what actions are being taken, or are needed, to resolve them? Through presentations from four speakers and a question and answer session, we aim to bring together concerned parties around the topic of River Culm water quality – to inform, debate and outline actions to secure a better future water quality for the Culm, its inhabitants and people who benefit from a healthy river.

Our speakers are:

  • Mark Worsfold, South West Water, Director, Asset Management. Mark is in charge of SWW’s infrastructure including its sewage treatment works and storm overflows.
  • Prof Peter Hammond – Windrush Against Sewage Pollution volunteer. Peter featured on the film Rivercide and has analysed data from seven water companies nationally, identifying more than 3,000 allegedly illegal spills from 58 treatment works in the last 5 years. The River Culm was ranked the 8th most polluted river for illegal sewage spills out of those analysed.
  • Richard Horrocks – Riverfly survey coordinator and fisherman, who has been monitoring water quality in the Culm for many years.
  • Dr Holly Pearson/Simon Browning – Westcountry Rivers Trust, who coordinate the CSI monitoring on the Culm and manage the data collected from remote monitoring stations.
