RAF Culmhead guided tour

Join us for a unique and informative guided tour of the historic airfield at RAF Culmhead, lead by the knowledgeable Brian Lane-Smith, chair of South West Airfields Heritage Trust.

RAF Culmhead is a former Royal Air Force station built during the Second World War. Its location on high, flat land in the Blackdown Hills, close to the Atlantic and the English Channel, made it the ideal base for air crews protecting supply ships from attack by German submarines.

During the tour, you’ll find out about the base’s role during the Second World War and its significance in shaping aviation history.

We will meet at Culmhead Business Park next to the RAF Culmhead interpretation boards located in the carpark. Postcode: TA3 7DY or what3words: dinosaur.household.bearable

Due to the size of the site, we will drive in convey across the airfield before parking and exploring the derelict remains of RAF Culmhead.

The tour will last about one hour. You will then have the option to drive to Upottery Heritage Centre, Slough Lane, Smeatharpe Devon, EX14 9RD to explore the Second World War displays located in a historic Nissen hut.

We will be walking on rough and uneven ground. Appropriate footwear is required and long trousers are recommended.

No facilities are available at the site.
