The Work of Giants! – Exhibition at Thelma Hulbert Gallery
The Work of Giants! – An immersive art installation at Thelma Hulbert Gallery
Step into a world of myth, mystery and ancient landscapes at The Work of Giants!, an immersive art installation now showing at Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton.
Led by theatre company Four of Swords, the project brought together Year 8 students from Honiton Community College and members of Dementia Friendly Honiton to creatively explore the landscapes of East Devon and the Blackdown Hills. Through storytelling, sensory exploration, sound, collage, writing and performance, participants reimagined who might have shaped these monumental places—drawing inspiration from the Old English phrase Enta Geweorc, meaning ‘The Work of Giants!’.
The creative journey included field trips and workshops, culminating in a filmed ritual performance at the Iron Age hillfort of Blackbury Camp.
The exhibition showcases the outcomes of this collaborative process and invites visitors to experience the landscapes through the eyes of those who took part.
The Work of Giants! was developed in partnership by Blackdown Hills National Landscape and East Devon National Landscape, with support from Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Dementia Friendly Honiton, Honiton Community College and English Heritage. It forms part of Nature Calling, a national art programme funded by Arts Council England, which uses creativity to inspire new ways for people to connect with nature and the places that shape their lives.
