Fabulous forests!

In Farming & land management, Nature & wellbeing, Nature & wildlife

While the nation’s forests have remained open for exercise and recreation, our team has been busy completing our scheduled forestry work. We have now finished the current work programme in the Blackdown Hills AONB, so all our woodlands are fully open once again.

Winter is a wonderful time to explore the forest, wrapped up against the frost or the rain. The light through the trees can be truly magical and the views are always spectacular, whether they’re clear and sparkling or shrouded in mist. Visit the Forestry England website to find forests near you and check Forestry England’s Covid-19 visitor information for a safe and enjoyable trip.

As we look ahead to nature re-awakening next year, we have installed new bat boxes at several forests to help us monitor and record bat populations. Bats are an important indicator species that help us understand more about woodland health. This, in turn, supports our forest management decisions. As well as being good for the bats, of course.

We’re also continuing to update our brand identity with new welcome signs at our sites. In 2019, we marked 100 years of the Forestry Commission with the launch of Forestry England. We are the public body responsible for caring for the nation’s forests to produce sustainable timber, provide space for nature, and support outdoor adventures. Trees care for us and, together, we care for forests. I hope to see you there in 2021.
