The ruins of a castle next to a house

Pre-booked self-guided tours to see the rare surviving ruins of Hemyock’s moated medieval castle.

Hemyock Castle dates from 1380, fortifying an older manor house. It was ‘slighted’ (destroyed) during the English Civil War period in the 1640s, after two brutal sieges. Some buildings were later adapted for farm or residential use, but most of the ruins were not ‘restored’ by later owners; so a rare survival of some original castle defences.

A large part of the eastern gatehouse archway remains, together with parts of some towers, curtain walls and moat which surround the old manor house. See also the ancient cider press, pottery and farmyard displays.

The manor house and some other buildings are private homes and closed to visitors.

There are special displays for ‘creativity unwrapped’ opening windows into the past, by creative reuse of artefacts and technology.

Hemyock Castle’s Heritage Open Day is on Sunday 10 September 2023, 2pm to 5pm, with bookings at 2pm, 230pm, 3pm, 3.30pm, and 4pm. Approximately 15 bookings per half-hour.
