We are looking to recruit a team of Adder Survey Volunteers to work alongside staff and volunteers from the AONB, Somerset Reptile and Amphibian Group and the Forestry Commission. This is the training day for all potential volunteers to attend before undertaking the surveying which will be on various Forestry England sites across the Blackdown Hills.
During the training day volunteers will learn the necessary skills to survey for adders including their ecology, how to identify them and what data to collect once you have found them. Surveys will begin in mid-March, with the training day, and continue until the end of May when adders become difficult to find. All survey groups will need to undertake a minimum of at least 3 surveys before the end of May.
The Blackdown Healthy Living Centre, where the training is held is an accessible venue however volunteers will need to be able to walk up to 2 miles over rough terrain and survey sites may involve climbing over fences and gates where unavoidable.
